God's Plan for the Family: Honoring Fathers

Jun 21, 2026    Pastor Gerri Di Somma

This powerful message confronts us with a challenging truth: the health of our families, communities, and nations depends on honoring fathers. Drawing from Deuteronomy 5:16 and Ephesians 6:2-3, we're reminded that honoring our father and mother isn't just a nice suggestion—it's the first commandment with a promise attached. When we honor our fathers, things go well with us and we live long on the earth. The message explores five crucial areas of honor: honoring God the Father, honoring God the Son, honoring spiritual leaders, honoring older men, and finally, honoring our natural fathers. What makes this teaching particularly convicting is the recognition that while we may find it easy to honor God who is distant, honoring the father in our home—where we're an open book—becomes our greatest challenge. The absence of fathers in homes and churches has created an identity crisis in our generation. We learn that a father's role is to affirm identity, provide security, and model godly manhood. The message doesn't excuse bad fathers, but it challenges us to separate the person from their behavior. Even if our father was absent, abusive, or disappointing, we're still called to love, forgive, and honor him—not because he earned it, but because it's a principle that unlocks blessing in our lives. This isn't about feelings; it's about obedience to a divine principle that carries supernatural provision.
